METRICS INC. EXPANDS ITS POTENT SERVICES

Company names director to manage growth of potent and cytotoxic drug handling capabilities

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Metrics Inc., one of the fastest–growing contract pharmaceutical development laboratories in the United States, is expanding its potent and cytotoxic drug handling capabilities.

Overseeing the expansion is Joe Cascone, the company’s new director of potent pharmaceutical development.

Cascone previously served as manager of pharmaceutical development at Metrics, where he was directly responsible for all aspects related to the formulation of solid–oral and liquid–dosage forms for high–quality, fast–track contract GMP pilot–plant supporting pre–clinical to phase 3 projects.

Prior to that, Cascone was a senior formulation scientist for Metrics, and was responsible for GMP compliance with regard to formulation, process development and clinical batch manufacture, as well as scale–up and technical transfer of phase 1 and 2 projects.

Cascone holds a bachelor’s of science degree in biology and chemistry from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in business administration from East Carolina University. He is a member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering and the Forum for Pharmaceutical Professionals.

“By creating this new position at Metrics and placing someone as knowledgeable and capable as Joe in it, we are reinforcing our ongoing commitment to providing clients with high–quality formulation development of these compounds,” said Phil Hodges, president.

Approximately 40 percent of new chemical entities currently in development in the United States are potent or toxic compounds. The pharmaceutical industry expects this to grow to 60 percent in the next three to five years, primarily due to the focus on cancer and immunologic therapies.

In order to best serve this anticipated growth, Cascone will oversee the expansion of Metrics’ capabilities for these types of new chemical entities.
