METRICS ANNOUNCES NEW, UNIQUE
CONTROLLED RELEASE TECHNOLOGY
Scientists Gold, Woodall
file patent application
(GREENVILLE, NC) Metrics, Inc., a North Carolina-based pharmaceutical development company, can now offer a unique, extended release platform that allows for controlled dissolution of active pharmaceutical ingredients in a range of drug products in tablet dosage form.
At Metrics, scientists have discovered that a carefully selected formulation of excipients (filling agents), in conjunction with a functional film coating, produces a tablet with a zero-order or near-zero order in-vitro dissolution rate. Specifically, tablets produced with this technology can sustain a constant release of drug for up to and even exceeding 20 hours.
Brian Woodall, Development Scientist at Metrics, and Brad Gold, Director of Pharmaceutical Development and New technologies, are listed as inventors of this technology on the patent application filed recently.
“As the trend towards once-daily dosing continues, the need for controlled release tablets grows,” said Woodall. “At Metrics, we can offer clients a formulation option that is much less expensive and is easier to work with than current technologies.”
The formulation is suitable for both low and relatively high dose active ingredients, as well as water soluble and insoluble compounds. The extent of drug absorption has also shown to be improved. This flexibility and efficacy means that prescriptions that once required multiple tablets a day for dosing can now be reformulated to a once a day dosing. Ultimately, this translates into better patient compliance and market acceptance.
“We’re pleased to offer our clients a controlled release platform that they can’t find anywhere else,” said Phil Hodges, president of Metrics. “It’s another differentiator in our growing reputation as a premier pharmaceutical development company.”
